Secretary Ken Salazar
Department of the Interior
1849 C Street, N.W.
Washington DC 20240
Dear Secretary Salazar:
This missive is written to extend an invitation for you to attend our
2nd Annual World Day of Reconciliation and Healing
From the Legacy of Enslavement, in Richmond, Virginia and
Old Point Comfort, Fort Monroe, in Hampton,
Virginia, on August 20, 2011. I have enclosed a
Schedule of Events and informational flyers for your review.
Unfortunately, while I was honored to be the keynote speaker at the 2011 Dept. of Interior Juneteenth Observance in
Washington, DC., I was not afforded the opportunity to speak to you. I wanted to personally express to you, as the leader of
"Modern Juneteenth Movement" in America, the importance of our enslavement legacy project at
Old Point Comfort,
Fort Monroe, through the establishment of a National Park and Juneteenth Reconciliation Monument
at the site of the
landing of the first Africans in America.
Juneteenth Director for the state of Virginia is Sheri Bailey, Director of the annual
Virginia Juneteenth Celebration in
Hampton, VA. According to my recent conversation with sister Bailey, she was not aware of your recent trip to Hampton, VA
concerning the proposed national park project.
Please let me know who you have designated as the Project Director on this extremely important enslavement
legacy project to African Americans. We not only want to well informed by the DOI concerning the proposed national
park, but we desire to play a key role in all planning, especially the area where the historic marker where our ancestors
first arrived in America is located.
Please let us know if you are able to attend.
Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D.
